Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, commenting on the meeting today between the Prime Minister and French President, said:
“Despite the measured tones there can be little doubt that the Prime Minister faces a formidable uphill task in his ambition to provide political bridging between Washington and the rest of the European Union.
"It is going to be extremely difficult to provide practical leadership at both an EU and G8 level when there remain such difficult fault lines among traditional allies internationally.
"That is why the real test rests with both the new American Secretary of State and the promised European visit by President early next year.
