KENNEDY SAYS DEATH OF IRAQ'S GOVERNING COUNCIL IS "FURTHER SERIOUS SETBACK"

Embargo: Immediate, 17th May 2004

Charles Kennedy, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, has commented on the death of the head of Iraq's Governing Council in a car bomb blast near headquarters of the US-led coalition in Baghdad.

"This is yet another terrible bomb attack in Iraq. Those who carried it out demonstrated their enthusiasm for killing - regardless of who gets in their way - as they attempt to derail the political process and the creation of a stable, democratic Iraq.

"Ezzedine Salim's death is a further serious set-back. It will make it still more difficult to assemble the membership of a transitional authority for a peaceful handover to Iraqi sovereignty on June 30th."
