KENNEDY: 'ABSURD' IF PRIME MINISTER DOES NOT MAKE COMMONS STATEMENT ON AMERICA VISIT

Embargo: Immediate, 18th April 2004

Charles Kennedy, leader of the Liberal Democrats, called on the Prime Minister to make a statement to the House of Commons on Monday, following his meetings in America. Mr Kennedy said:

"There are now two vital issues which the Prime Minister should clarify in the House of Commons at the first opportunity on Monday.

"It is imperative that MPs have the opportunity to question him at some length, and in depth, about his meetings in America last week and the subsequent dangerous developments in the Middle East. It would be absurd if he chose not to do so.

"The Prime Minister must also settle the speculation over a possible European referendum. By definition a referendum on a proposed constitution involving constitutional considerations will be an openly debated matter. I have long since welcomed that opportunity, and the Liberal Democrats have consistently made that case.

However, the cause of such necessary openness is not helped by off the record briefings to newspapers and a series of nods and winks to selected individuals".
