KENNEDY: ABSENCE OF PRIME MINISTERIAL STATEMENT AFTER 'MEETINGS OF SUCH PROFOUND INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE' IS 'INEXPLICABLE'

Embargo: Immediate, 15th April 2004

Charles Kennedy, leader of the Liberal Democrats, commenting on reports that the Prime Minister will not make a statement to Parliament on Monday, regarding his meeting with President Bush and strategy on Iraq and the Middle East peace process, said:

"After meetings of such profound international importance, especially for Britain, it is inexplicable that the Prime Minister will not be making a statement to Parliament at the earliest opportunity.

"Since the House of Commons last met, the Prime Minister has discussed the escalating crisis in Iraq with President Bush and endorsed Ariel Sharon's unilateral proposals for the Middle East. These are on a par with other occasions which give rise to a Prime Ministerial statement in the House of Commons, such as an EU Summit and Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings.

The Prime Minister should not delegate this responsibility to his ministers."
