KENNEDY SAYS THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST CONTINUE TO RESTORE STABILITY IN IRAQ

Kennedy says the international community must continue to work to restore stability to Iraq

Responding to the comments by the new Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, that he wants Spanish troops to leave by July if the UN hasn't taken over, Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said:

"Mr Rodriguez disagreed with the outgoing administration over the war in Iraq and says he wants Spanish troops to leave if the UN hasn't taken over by July.

"The coalition made a commitment to the Iraqi people to help them rebuild their country. Whether or not you supported the military action, the current instability means it will be some time before Iraq can handle its own security. The international community has an obligation to help bring this uncertainty to an end. I certainly expect British troops will have to remain there for some time to come."
