Rt Hon Charles Kennedy

KENNEDY: WE MUST NOT RELY ON 'OVERWHELMING USE OF US MILITARY FORCE' IN IRAQ

Embargo: Immediate, 28th April 2004
Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, today questioned Tony Blair at Prime Minister's Questions over future deployments of British troops in Iraq.

Mr Kennedy asked the Prime Minister whether he had received a "specific request" for more British troops from President Bush. It comes at a time when hostilities in Falluja persist and Spanish troops are withdrawing from the country. The Prime Minister said that no specific requests had been made.

Mr Kennedy pointed out to the Prime Minister, in the context of this continuing violence in Iraq, that were more troops deployed he would have to "demonstrate his influence in Washington". This would involve a "clear military and political strategy" to deal with the violence in Iraq. The Prime Minister replied that a strategy was already underway.
