Charles Kennedy MP has hailed the news that the Scottish Government will match Westminster’s funding for the Highland sleeper trains as “a victory for the Highlands”.
Transport Scotland has come under intense criticism for suggesting that the Highland Sleepers could be abandoned, in its Rail 2014 consultation. SNP ministers backtracked on the plan but had failed to match the Coalition’s offer of £50 million to renew the Sleeper rolling stock.
Charles Kennedy said:
“I’m delighted that the Scottish Government has seen sense and decided to back the trains.
“This welcome news is an early Christmas present for the Highlands.
“This is a good example of campaigning leading to practical action from Lib Dems in the Coalition Government.”
