Charles Kennedy is MP for the seat of Ross, Skye and Lochaber (created after recent boundary changes reduced the number of Westminster Parliamentary Seats in Scotland to 59 from 72)
The new parliamentary seat contains 18 of the 28 wards from the Ross & Skye areas of the old Ross, Skye & Inverness West seat, plus eight wards from the Lochaber area of the old Inverness East, Nairn & Lochaber seat. This is the largest constituency in the UK at 12,000 square miles, stretching from Dingwall and the Black Isle in the north east, Ullapool in the north west, the Isle of Skye and the small isles in the West and Glencoe and Fort William to the south.
Topographically it is a typical Highland region with lochs, glens, islands and mountains. The industry of the area is both natural and traditional; forestry, fishing, crafting, quarrying and several whisky distilleries. Tourism is also big business with much to see including rugged and romantic Glencoe, and Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in the UK. Another highlight is the beautiful railway journey between Mallaig and Fort William, which has gained wider fame because of the Harry Potter films. The constituency also contains the controversial Skye Bridge, where tolls have recently been abolished, and, appropriately, given the seat's high number of Gaelic speakers, the Gaelic College, Sabhal Mor Ostaig, on Skye.
